Sweet, floral flavor wins coffee-fest competition

Lafayette Coffee is winner of the Gevalia Kona Coffee Cupping Competition, part of the Big Island's Kona Coffee Cultural Festival this month. The coffee farm, owned by Andy and Kazune Lafayette, is in Ho'okena, South Kona, between the 1,600 and 1,700-foot level. Overall deciding factors? "A bright floral fragrance and mellow sweetness body in the cup," said cupping judge John King (and maybe something to do with Ho'okena, which means "to satisfy thirst").

Second place went to Moki's Farm in Captain Cook, owned by Vivian and Roger Rittenhouse, and third place was awarded to Hua Hua Farm, in Holualoa, owned by Phil and Clare Wilson.

Just call it a steak house

KODAMA
D.K. Kodama has decided to rename his two-month-old Waikiki steak house. Rather than just being the "steak house" appended onto the lengthy moniker of his Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar, he'll call it d.k. Steak House. Kodama explained that, although Sansei and the steak house are side-by-side in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, the steak house has its own menu, kitchen and bar. Also in Kodama's restaurant group is Vino in Kapalua, Maui, which introduces a new Italian-inspired Pacific Rim menu next month, and Hiroshi Eurasion Tapas, which took over the old Sansei location in Restaurant Row last month. Kodama says he's pau opening new spots for now.
