Police pursue hijacked truck
By Peter Boylan

A man accused of shoplifting at Sam's Club ran away from security officers, hijacked a truck at knifepoint and forced the driver to lead police officers on a chase down Kapi'olani Boulevard, police said.
Bruce Asato The Honolulu Advertiser "This was a high-intensity situation. There were a lot of officers converging on the car."
The man, whom police declined to identify at the scene, was stopped by store security officers at Sam's Club on Ke'eaumoku Street at about 2 p.m. yesterday after he was seen taking merchandise, police said.
After he was caught, the man returned the merchandise to the security officers and asked to be let go. When the security officers declined, he made a run for it, according to police.
As he ran out onto Ke'eaumoku, he jumped into the passenger seat of a black Ford F-150 pickup truck at a stoplight. The driver, a federal police officer who asked not to be identified by name, told police that the man pulled out a pocketknife and told him to drive on.
The driver turned right on Kapi'olani Boulevard and headed toward the downtown financial district. Meanwhile, store security officers called police and gave them a description of the truck and the license plate number. Patrol officers quickly found the truck and began following it down Kapi'olani. Ten police cars gave chase, sirens blaring.
The driver turned right onto Cooke Street, allowing patrol officers to converge on the truck from behind and from King Street, blocking the vehicle in front of a Tesoro gas station, police said.
It was a "smart" move when the driver pulled up Cooke Street, according to Moniz, who said: "He did an excellent job."
Once the driver stopped the truck, he pulled the keys out of the ignition and ran, police said. Officers ordered the suspect out of the car and he refused, setting the stage for a potential standoff, said Moniz.
Eventually, Moniz said, officers were able to pull the man out of the truck and handcuff him. Once officers got him out of the vehicle, he fell unconscious, prompting police to call an ambulance. He was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, shackled at the wrists and ankles.
Police cordoned off the area with yellow tape as investigators dusted the truck for fingerprints and searched for evidence. After giving his statements to officers, the driver of the truck, who was wearing a dark polo shirt with "Federal Police" printed in bright yellow on the back, was driven away in an unmarked police car.
The suspect was arrested for investigation of robbery, kidnapping, trespassing, and four counts of terroristic threatening. Police said he was known to store security officers as a potential threat.
