HAWAI'I BRIEFS
Fisherman held in stabbing death

Advertiser Staff

A 20-year-old man was stabbed to death about 12:30 a.m. yesterday after an argument with another man on Pier 17 in downtown Honolulu.

Police arrested a 30-year-old man several hours later near Smith Street and Nimitz Highway as a suspect in the case.

Police homicide Lt. Bill Kato said the suspect and victim were drinking with two other men in the galley of the Kathleen II, a fishing boat that was tied up at Pier 17. The two men began to argue and went up on deck where the stabbing took place. The murder weapon has not been recovered, Kato said.

He said the two men are fishermen from Kiribati and are here on work visas.

Local HIV/AIDS groups rally today

Local HIV/AIDS organizations will hold a rally for World AIDS Day at 5:30 p.m. today at Queen Emma Square outside St. Andrews Cathedral on Beretania Street.

This year's World AIDS Day theme is "Women, Girls, HIV and AIDS."

A UN report says young women and girls are more susceptible to HIV than males due to inadequate knowledge about AIDS, insufficient access to HIV prevention services, inability to negotiate safer sex and a lack of female-controlled HIV prevention methods.

A proclamation recognizing World AIDS Day by Gov. Linda Lingle will be read by Olena Rubin, Miss Hawai'i 2004. Rubin has volunteered with AIDS organizations for more than a decade.

Traffic rerouted during parade

The city again this year will allow traffic to cross King Street at Nu'uanu and Alakea streets intermittently during Saturday's City Lights Parade, hoping to avoid the problems created for residents and businesses when access was cut off to parking garages, restaurants and theaters in 2002.

The parade starts at 6 p.m. at 'A'ala Park, moves down King Street and ends at Honolulu Hale at about 6:30 p.m.

Starting at about 5 p.m. traffic on North King Street, from Liliha Street in Kalihi to South Street in Kaka'ako will be closed. At 5:45 p.m. mauka-makai streets downtown between River and Punchbowl streets will be closed altogether or detoured to allow drivers to reach public garages. The city suggests that people arrive before 5 p.m. to avoid traffic problems.

Buses will be detoured from King Street to Hotel Street that evening and information will be posted at TheBus stops.

Special traffic controls will be in place to allow access to parking at Mark's Garage, Macy's and the Chinatown Gateway parking lots from Beretania Street for those attending the Jim Nabors Christmas Concert at Hawai'i Theatre or having dinner in the area. Parking is also available in the Smith Beretania Park parking garage.

Streets will be reopened progressively after the parade except for King Street from Punchbowl to South Street, which will be closed until 9 p.m.

Motorcyclist dies when hit by truck

A motorcyclist was killed Monday when he was hit by a truck while trying to cross Hana Highway at Pulehu Road.

Police said Gary Wayne Begley was riding his 1999 Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycle on Pulehu Road and was crossing the Pa'ia-bound lanes of Hana Highway when he was hit by a 2000 Ford F150 pickup truck traveling toward Pa'ia.

Begley, who was not wearing a helmet, died at the scene.

The pickup driver, who was wearing a seat belt, and a front-seat passenger received minor injuries in the crash and were treated at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Maui County has recorded 18 traffic fatalities so far this year compared with 14 during the same period last year.

WINDWARD O'AHU

Double murder trial postponed

A trial scheduled next month for three men accused of murdering two men at the Pali Municipal Golf Course will be postponed while city prosecutors appeal a judge's ruling.

Rodney Joseph Jr., 36, Kevin Gonsalves, 33, and Ethan Motta, 34, are charged with the shooting murder of Lepo Utu Taliese and Romilius Corpuz and the attempted murder of Tinoimalu Sao, who was shot in the head at the Windward course Jan. 7.

City prosecutors say they will appeal Circuit Judge Michael Town's decision Sept. 30 to bar the use of Joseph's statements to detectives the day after the shooting. The judge ruled Joseph did not knowingly, intelligently and voluntarily give up his right to remain silent.

The trial will be suspended pending a ruling by the Hawai'i Supreme Court or Intermediate Court of Appeals on the appeal.

Motta has been released under restrictions after posting a $1 million bond. Joseph and Gonsalves are each being held on $1 million bail.

Waimanalo gets new canoe halau

The Waimanalo community has celebrated the completion of its new canoe halau, which will also serve as an informal gathering place for paddlers, residents and cultural activities at Waimanalo Beach Park.

The $504,113 project, conceived by the Waimanalo Canoe Club, utilizes low moss rock walls and five symmetrical columns that support a curved roof.

The side columns support three unrigged six-man Hawaiian racing canoes on each side, with the space between for storage of additional canoes and kayaks. Equipment such as paddles and canoe covers can be stored in a secured area in the attic loft.

Security grille panels allow flow-through air circulation.

Ralph S. Inouye Co., Ltd. was the project contractor and AKTA Ltd. the architect.

"We congratulate the people of Waimanalo for helping to create this centerpiece for their community," said Mayor Jeremy Harris at the dedication Saturday.
