ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
First Thursdays at a new location

Advertiser Staff and News Services

First Thursdays debuts at its new Hawaiian Hut location tonight with live music performances adding to its always-entertaining collection of local slam competitors.

Slack-key guitar whiz Makana, right, will offer a brief set; Cali-based hip-hop artist Prach throws down educational work on his Cambodian upbringing. The popular local poetry slam competition was forced to find a new home after Studio 1 shut down last month.

Tonight's top qualifier still wins $100 and — along with a second-place winner — a spot on HawaiiSlam's 2005 National Poetry Slam Team. Doors open at 7:45 p.m.; the show starts at 8:30 p.m. Entry is $3 before showtime, and $5 thereafter. The Hawaiian Hut is on the ground floor of the Ala Moana Hotel. For more information call 387-9664.

Help for men seeking 'special' gifts for ladies

Natasha McKenzie shows off Kini Zamora's "Dungeon Princess" design.
Sensually Yours, a lingerie (and whatnots) shop at 1130 North Nimitz Highway, is holding a "Gentlemen's Club" evening to help men select gifts for their wives or significant others today from 5 to 9 p.m.

There will be a fashion show featuring lingerie and evening attire by Kini Zamora, an up-and-coming O'ahu designer. For information, call 599-1655.

Free pupu and soft drinks will be served, along with a generous helping of gift-giving guidance.

FINAL WORD

Nicholas Cage, Star of "National Treasure," in a Zap2it.com report:

"... I'm very content at this time in my life. I don't want to say happy, because that's too fragile of a word, but I'm definitely content and I'm hopeful about the future."
