Student authors autograph books

Student author Joshua "Kaipo" Stender and illustrator Kynaston "Kaika" Lindsey will sign copies of "The Fish and Their Gifts" from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Native Books/Ward Centre.

Lindsey was one of nine students who created the artwork for the book.

"The Fish and Their Gifts" is Kamehameha Schools Press' first children's literature publication and was written and illustrated entirely by middle and high school students at Kanu O Ka'Aina charter school on the Big Island.



Storage company offers scholarships

Hawai'i Self Storage will offer college scholarships of up to $1,000 per year to eight O'ahu students who attend high school near the business' Salt Lake and future Pearl City locations.

The eligible high schools are Moanalua, Pearl City, Radford, Farrington, Nanakuli and Wai'anae.

'Bubbles' makes library rounds

Storyteller and magician Bubbles the Balloon Lady will perform at four public libraries next weekend.

The events will feature popular children's stories, balloon twisting and magic tricks.

The 45-minute program is suitable for all ages.

Bubbles will appear:

• Dec. 12 at 2:30 p.m. at Kane'ohe Public Library.

• Dec. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at Hawai'i Kai Public Library.

• Dec. 14 at 10:30 a.m. at Waipahu Public Library.

• Dec. 14 at 2:30 p.m. at Wai'anae Public Library.

Artwork part of Bodhi Day gala

Artwork by Pacific Buddhist Academy freshmen will be on display at Jodo Mission on Sunday during the Hawai'i Buddhist Council's community-wide Bodhi Day celebration.

A service will be held at 9 a.m. in remembrance of Gautama Buddha's attainment of enlightenment while sitting under the Bodhi tree.

The display of drawings, ink and brush paintings and clay Buddhas will be on display after the service.

Youth award nominees sought

Volvo Cars of North America is seeking nominations for the "Alexandra Scott Butterfly Awards," which honor youths who seek to improve the quality of life, safety or environment of others.

Volvo will donate $25,000 to the winner's charity of choice.

Nominations are due Jan. 10.

The award is named in honor of one of its first recipients, the late Alexandra Scott, an 8-year-old cancer patient from Wynnewood, Pa., who raised money for pediatric cancer research with annual lemonade stands.

Scott's parents, who continue their daughter's endeavors through the foundation Alex's Lemonade Stand, will select the winner. Volvo will also donate $25,000 to their foundation.

The winner will be flown to New York City on March 23, for the annual awards ceremony, where Volvo will present its charitable contribution and a documentary film about the winner.



School hosts talk on academic plans

'Aiea High is hosting a community forum tonight on the academic plans that will be implemented during the 2005-2006 school year.

The 7 p.m. forum will be held in the school's library. "We would like to get the community's input to develop our academic plan," 'Aiea Principal Michael Tokioka said.



Service set for Damien teacher

Students and faculty members of Damien Memorial High School this morning will march from the school on Houghtailing Street to St. Theresa's Co-Cathedral for services for the late Brother Karl Canisius Berndlmaier, a Damien teacher and counselor who died Sunday of a heart attack at age 64.

Berndlmaier was a lifelong teacher and learner who entered the Catholic brotherhood right out of high school in New York. He spent a lifetime guiding students and participating in many aspects of campus life.

A prayer service was held last night at the chapel at Damien. At 9:15 a.m. today, the coffin will leave the chapel for services at St. Theresa's Co-Cathedral. A march of students and faculty to the Co-Cathedral will begin at 9:30 a.m., with services to follow.

Five students and the camp rector will serve as pallbearers for the service.

Berndlmaier will be buried at Hawaiian Memorial Park.
