No. 18 BYUH holds off HPU, 81-73

Jake Chrisman scored a game-high 31 points as No. 18 Brigham Young-Hawai'i fended off Hawai'i Pacific, 81-73, in a non-conference basketball game last night at Blaisdell Arena.

The game marked the first meeting between new HPU head coach/athletic director J.D. Barnett and BYUH coach Ken Wagner.

HPU rallied from a 63-48 second-half deficit to close to 63-61 on Audrius Peciukas' basket with 9:17 remaining.

BYUH responded with a 6-0 run for a 69-61 lead with 6:15 left. Thomas Watkins scored four points during the key surge.

Michael Stowell scored 14 and Shawn Opunui 10 for BYUH (4-1). Dante Sykes scored 18, Gene Barnes 15, Peciukas 12, Aleks Jakovcjevic 10 and Aleksandar Bojic 10 for HPU (3-2).

Cotner, Wilson take aim at PGA Tour

Former Hawai'i residents Keoki Cotner and Dean Wilson opened with 67 and 68, respectively, in the PGA Tour Qualifying School's Final Stage Tournament at La Qunita, Calif.

Cotner, a Kamehameha Schools alum who played on the Nationwide Tour, shot 33-34, while Wilson, a Castle High alum who failed to keep his PGA Tour card, shot 35-33.

Scott Simpson, former Hawai'i resident and PGA Tour veteran, shot 71.

Scott Gump shot 66 to lead the 108-hole event. The top 30 finishers qualify for the 2005 PGA Tour season.
