Advertiser Staff

The Kamehameha Warriors, behind the running of Jayson Rego and a strong secondary, defeated Leilehua, 28-7, to win its first state high school football title.

Rego's 79-yard touchdown run in the third period broke a 7-all tie. The Warriors secondary intercepted four passes. Pono Kam put the game away with two fourth-quarter touchdowns.

The Warriors last won a state title in 1976 when it won the Oahu Prep Bowl, which was then the mythical state title. The Warriors last won the Interscholastic League of Honolulu title in 1979.
