Schofield soldier dies in Afghanistan

As Schofield Barracks yesterday mourned the deaths of three soldiers in Afghanistan, the Pentagon last night added a new name to the rolls.

Spc. Isaac E. Diaz, 26, of Rio Hondo, Texas, died Wednesday in Sharona, Afghanistan, when his military vehicle rolled over, the Defense Department said.

Diaz was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment "Wolfhounds." He is the 13th Schofield Barracks soldier to die as a result of injuries received in Afghanistan, and the 46th service member with Hawai'i ties to be killed in Iraq, Afghanistan or Kuwait since the start of the Iraq war in March of 2003.

The military said Diaz was taking part in a routine security patrol Wednesday evening in Paktika Province when the rollover occurred.

No other information on Diaz was available last night.

Also, a convoy was hit by a roadside bomb on Wednesday near Asadabad near the Pakistan border and a soldier was wounded, but was returned to duty, according to the military.
