Hanukkah to get modern spin

B'nai B'rith and Shaloha Hillel will be giving a bit of a twist to Hanukkah this year when they present "Chanukkahpalooza 2004" at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the UH Campus Center Courtyard at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, 2500 Campus Road.

DJ Kee will be spinning, and a sketch artist will be creating, portraits. Also new this year is a malassada-eating contest. Menorah lighting will be at 7 p.m.

Other offerings: arts and crafts, storytelling, dreidel games and latkes.

Admission is free.

Council presents Bodhi Day event

The Hawaii Buddhist Council will present a Bodhi Day (Jodo-E) service at 9 a.m. tomorrow at the Jodo Mission of Hawaii, 1429 Makiki St.

The guest speaker will be the Rev. Jion "Donald" Prosser.

Bodhi Day celebrates the enlightenment of Shakyamuni Buddha more than 2,500 years ago.

The council is composed of the Higashi Hongwanji Mission, Honpa Hongwanji Mission, Jodo Mission, Nichiren Mission, Shingon Mission, Soto Mission and Tendai Mission.
