UH men's volleyball signs 6-foot-8 blocker

The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team secured a commitment from a 6-foot-8 middle blocker for the 2006 season, UH coach Mike Wilton announced this week.

Matthew Rawson, a Los Angeles native who attends Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, Calif., signed a letter of intent with UH.

Rawson is a two-time USA Volleyball Association All-American and has spent time training with the Youth Junior National team.

Rawson is the only early signee for the Warriors who open the 2005 campaign with a pair of exhibition matches Dec. 29 and 31 at the Stan Sheriff Center against the University of Alberta (Canada).



Applications available for Jingle Bell Run

The 20th annual Jingle Bell Run, a fun run/walk that covers less than two miles in downtown Honolulu, will be held next Saturday.

The race, a benefit for Special Olympics Hawai'i, starts at 6 p.m. but that will be only part of the festivities.

A crazy canine costume contest and stroller decorating contest will be held at 5 p.m. Food booths also will open at 5. Games also will take place.

After the race at 6:30, a concert featuring Vaihi, Weldon Kekauoha and Tapa Groove, and Imua will be held.

Also, one participant (must be Hawai'i resident 18 years and older) will win a new Saturn Ion.

Packet pickup is Friday Dec. 10 from noon to 7 p.m. at Aloha Tower Marketplace and Dec. 11 until 4 p.m. at Alapai Bus Depot.

Gatorade honors Baldwin linebacker

Kaluka Maiava, of Baldwin High School, was named 2004 Hawai'i Football Player of the Year by Gatorade this week.

Maiava, a 6-foot, 215-pound linebacker for the Bears, was selected based on his accomplishments on and off the field, including academics and overall character. He committed to Southern California last month.

Maiava, a second-team all-state selection last year, also participates in soccer and baseball.

Gatorade also recognizes a player of the year in each state and the District of Columbia for baseball, volleyball, softball, soccer, basketball and track and field.



UH women sixth; men 9th in Texas

The University of Hawai'i women's team remained in sixth place with 191 points entering today's final day of the University of Texas Invitational at Austin, Texas.

The UH men moved up one spot to ninth with 95 points. The Texas men and women lead the meet with 518.50 and 590.50 points, respectively.

UH athletes set 13 personal bests yesterday. QiongJie Huang won for the second day in a row, claiming the 1-meter springboard event with a 309.70 score.
