Walker dies after being hit by car

A pedestrian has died from injuries suffered when he was struck late Friday night by a 2002 Audi convertible on Nu'uanu Avenue north of Vineyard Boulevard, according to Honolulu police.

The man was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the Audi was driven by a 48-year-old man traveling north on Nu'uanu. The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk when he was hit, police said. The driver of the car was not speeding, they said.

Police did not give the name or age of the pedestrian.



Robber escapes after bank heist

A man robbed a branch of the First Hawaiian Bank yesterday, fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money.

A man in his 40s approached a teller at the Beretania and Pensacola branch at 11:46 a.m. and demanded money. He kept his hand in his jacket pocket, indicating he had a gun, police said.

After taking the money, the man ran makai on Pensacola Street.

Police said he was caucasian with shoulder-length blond hair. He wore a tan jacket and khaki pants.

Mingle, jingle event in Palolo

The Palolo Neighborhood Board will hold a special recess during its regular monthly meeting to allow residents time to meet each other as well as lawmakers, city and state department representatives and other caretakers of the valley. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Palolo Elementary School cafeteria.

Called "Meet, Mingle & Jingle," the event will include entertainment and refreshments.

Workshop set on wildlife project

A public workshop on the Hawai'i Watchable Wildlife Project will be held at 6:30 p.m Thursday in the state Department of Land and Natural Resources' board room, Kalanimoku State Office Building, 1151 Punchbowl St.

The workshop will give an overview of the project and seek input on specific wildlife viewing locations on O'ahu that should be included in the viewing network.

Ray Tabata, chairman of the project's steering committee, said the project provides an opportunity to better appreciate, observe and protect Hawai'i's native wildlife.

A Hawai'i Wildlife Viewing Guide will be developed to list the viewing sites by island, along with information and guidelines on how best to watch wildlife.

Community input is sought to ensure that sensitive and threatened wildlife and habitats are protected from overuse by directing visitors to areas with appropriate facilities.

Waikiki beach fests to continue

Mayor-elect Mufi Hannemann says he will continue the popular Sunset on the Beach and Brunch on the Beach events initiated by Mayor Jeremy Harris.

In a recent talk to the Waikiki Improvement Association, Hannemann said he would look for more private sponsors.

He also said he is interested in helping other communities start similar events.

Hannemann credited Harris for improvements to Waikiki and said he wants to continue many of the initiatives but has some reservations.

He said part of improving Waikiki is ensuring public safety and security.



HPU dean on History Channel

Michael Pavkovic, associate dean of Hawai'i Pacific University's College of Liberal Arts and associate professor of history, will appear on the History Channel at 9 a.m. today.

The episode featuring Pavkovic is part of the Command Decisions series and focuses on the 1797 Battle of Rivoli.



Part of Likelike to be closed

The Honolulu-bound lanes of Likelike Highway will be closed between Wilson Tunnel and Valley View Drive from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. today for paving work. One lane in both directions will be closed between the tunnel and Emmeline Place during daytime hours tomorrow through Friday.

As for nighttime work, the Kane'ohe-bound lanes of Likelike will be closed from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. today through Friday for tunnel reconstruction work.

One Honolulu-bound lane will be closed near the tunnel from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. today through Friday for repairs.



Dec. 17 sessions to address aging

The Hawai'i Executive Office on Aging and County Area Agencies on Aging are planning events across the state Dec. 17 to seek ideas and information from Hawai'i seniors and baby boomers on issues that affect older Americans, such as long-term care and health care. Comments will be accepted through mid-June.
