Man allegedly stole store items

Burglary charges are pending against a 40-year-old man who was picked up by police behind an Ala Moana area business about 9 p.m. yesterday.

Patrol officers were responding to an alarm call when they saw a man leaving the rear of the building.

The man was detained and property from the store was recovered.



Suspected thief faces gun charge

A man who would have faced a minor charge after he was caught shoplifting Saturday night at Ala Moana Center is in much deeper trouble after authorities reported finding a loaded handgun on him.

Police were called to the shopping center about 9:55 p.m. by store security workers who detained the man.

The 21-year-old man was arrested for suspicion of failing to keep a firearm in a proper place, possession of an unregistered firearm and third-degree theft.



Vesper charged with car theft

A man who allegedly drove a van over a police officer has been charged with criminal property damage and car theft, police said yesterday.

City prosecutors also are expected to ask an O'ahu grand jury to indict Daniel Vesper III on a charge of first-degree attempted murder. In the meantime, Vesper, 43, was being held on $100,000 bail.

Officer Jeffrey Omai was hit by the van Thursday night at Honolulu Community College as officers investigated an armed robbery earlier in the day at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa. Initially listed in critical condition, Omai, 35, has been upgraded to guarded condition.

An islandwide search for Vesper ended Friday night when he was captured in Kalihi.



Woman arrested in assault case

Police arrested a 36-year-old Nanakuli woman on suspicion of second-degree assault yesterday after the woman's former domestic partner, 35, told police the older woman stabbed her in the back.

Police said the two women were involved in a dispute that escalated into an assault case when the younger woman was stabbed about 9:50 p.m. at her home in Nanakuli.

The stabbing victim was taken to the Queen's Medical Center where she was listed in serious condition upon arrival.



Arrest made after alleged threat

A 26-year-old Makakilo woman was arrested for suspicion of terroristic threatening after her neighbor, 32, told police the woman threatened him with a large kitchen knife about 9:20 a.m.

Police said the man who reported being threatened told them he was involved in an ongoing argument with his neighbor over his use of a telephone.

Police found the woman at her home and arrested her after the neighbor identified her as the one who threatened him.



Woman carrying shotgun nabbed

Police arrested a 24-year-old woman at Maile Beach Park early yesterday morning on firearms charges.

Police who were responding to a report of a woman carrying a firearm on the beach found the woman about 2:15 a.m. carrying a sawed-off shotgun.

Police arrested her on suspicion of failing to keep a firearm in a proper place and possession of a prohibited firearm.



Boys could face burglary charges

Two Kane'ohe boys could face burglary charges after a neighbor discovered his home was broken into yesterday afternoon.

Police said the two boys entered the home and took miscellaneous items about 5:50 p.m.

The two boys, whose ages were not released, were turned over to their parents without charges pending further investigation.



Man arrested in identity theft case

A 31-year-old Kalihi man was arrested for suspicion of identity theft and fraudulent use of a credit card after he allegedly tried to purchase about $260 of merchandise about 3:30 a.m. at the Kunia Wal-Mart store by using a stolen debit card.

A store cashier became suspicious and police were called.

The man was arrested and released without charges pending further investigation.



Man says woman entered his home

A 32-year-old woman was arrested in Hale'iwa early yesterday morning after a 23-year-old man told police he awoke to find the unknown woman standing in his living room.

Police said the man reported telling the woman to get out of his home but that she took two surfboards as she was leaving. They said the man followed the woman and took back the surfboards.

Police said the man woke up his roommate when he got home to tell him what had happened and the roommate discovered his wallet was missing.

The two men called police and together with responding officers were able to locate the woman, who was arrested for first-degree burglary.
