Advertiser Staff

Quarterback Tim Chang, who set the NCAA record for career passing yards, was given the Alec Waterhouse Most Valuable Player award at the University of Hawai'i football awards banquet at Sheraton Waikiki Hotel last night.

Chang, a senior from Waipahu, has passed for 16,667 yards with one game remaining — Dec. 24 against Alabama-Birmingham in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl. This season, he has completed 327 of 556 passes for 3,853 yards.

Defensive tackle Lui Fuga, a senior from Waipahu, was given the Ben Yee Most Inspirational Ward, and Kenny Patton, a sophomore from Altadena, Calif., earned the Scholar-Athlete Award.

Fuga played through injury and never missed a practice or game this season. He finished with 34 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and three quarterback hurries.

Patton, despite missing two games with a hamstring injury, finished sixth on the team with 51 tackles.

The captains awards went to wide receiver Chad Owens, cornerback Abraham Elimimian and Chad Kapanui on special teams. All three are seniors.

Warrior Club awards went to senior running back Michael Brewster, junior defensive end Melila Purcell and Owens.

Scout Team awards were given to offensive lineman Keith Ah Soon, defensive tackle Clarence Tuioti-Mariner and Orlando Wong on special teams. All three are freshmen.

PAC-FIVE's SATELE TO UH

Pac-Five senior linebacker Brashton Satele said last night he will give an oral commitment to play football for the University of Hawai'i.

"That's my dream since I was a little kid, to play at UH," Satele said.

The 6-foot-2, 235-pound Satele is being recruited as a linebacker and defensive end.

He is the son of Alvis Satele, who played for UH from 1981 to 1984.

The younger Satele said he also was recruited by Oregon State.
