HBA's Ho finishes 9th in West cross country

State cross country champion Lauren Ho, a junior at Hawai'i Baptist Academy, finished ninth at the Footlocker Cross Country West Regional Saturday at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif., according to the Footlocker Web site.

Ho finished the 5-kilometer course in 18 minutes, 43 seconds. Marie Lawrence of Reno, Nev., won the race in 17:56.

Iolani senior Nicole Anderson placed 52nd n 19:56.



HONORS

Three UH athletes given WAC awards

Three University of Hawai'i athletes were honored yesterday by the Western Athletic Conference.

• Junior Bryon Weinberg was named WAC men's tennis player of the month. Weinberg, of Ontario, Canada, was 4-3 in singles in November, and advanced to the round of 32 at the ITF Waikoloa Futures tournament.

• Senior Lauren Fitzgerald was named WAC women's tennis player of the month. Fitzgerald, of Santa Maria, Calif., was 2-1 in November, including an upset of No. 7 Diane Hollands of Arizona at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational.

• Freshman Melanie Schlan-ger was named WAC swimming and diving athlete of the week. Schlanger, of Buderim, Queensland, Australia, posted her fastest times of the season at the University of Texas Invitational. She swam the 50 freestyle in 22.95 seconds and the 100 free in 49.35, which is a Hawai'i record.

Punahou's Trigg-Smith named All-American

Punahou School senior midfielder Callum Trigg-Smith was named to the NSCAA/adidas High School Boys All-America Team, the only player from Hawai'i to be named to the boys or girls team.

Trigg-Smith will not be joining the Punahou team this season because he is recovering from anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament tears in his right knee.

He has committed to play for St. Mary's in California.



Weightlifting

Yamauchi earns spot on Junior World team

Bryce Yamauchi, of Team Hawai'i Weightlifting, broke a record at the American Open Weightlifting Championships, at Shreveport, La., last Friday.

Yamauchi lifted 98 kilograms (216 pounds) in the snatch for a junior record in the 56-kilometer (123-pound) class. His total of 217.5 kilograms in the snatch and clean and jerk qualified him for the American Junior World team that will compete in the Junior World Championships in Korea next year.
