Pa'aga brothers clash in Classic

HUB Goodwill FOOTBALL CLASSIC

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Aloha Stadium.

Tickets: $5 general; 6 and under free

Parking: $2.

TV/radio: OC 16 will broadcast the game live; no radio.

It took the 14th HUB Goodwill Football Classic to bring the Pa'aga brothers together on the same football field.

Castle two-way lineman Travis Pa'aga will be on the opposite side of Punahou linebacker Tysan in Friday's all-star game between the East and West at Aloha Stadium. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. Pregame ceremonies start at 7.

"It's exciting for our family," said Harry Pa'aga, father of the boys and a linebackers coach for Castle.

The game could pit brother against brother since Tysan (6 feet, 215 pounds) plays defense and Travis (6-2, 263) plays both. But because there are no depth issues, Travis said he will probably just play defensive line. In the event he does play offensive line ...

"I would try to put him on the ground," Travis said with a little smile.

Both are happy that they will play in the same game. Tysan, who has attended Punahou since the eighth grade, is a year older than Travis. Tysan said he was held back a year, which is how he and his brother are the same grade level and playing in a senior all-star game.

"I waited four years for this," Tysan said.

"It pumps me up to challenge him," Travis added.

The game is called a goodwill classic because it gives players who competed against one another to play alongside one another for one night. During practices, it is not unusual for players to exchange helmet decals of their schools.

"It's a big pleasure to play in this game with the best (players) in the state," said Travis, who was named to the O'ahu Interscholastic Association East all-star first team as an offensive and defensive lineman.

The game, which is sponsored by the Hawaii Union Builders Foundation, gives college recruiters another chance to look at Hawai'i talent. University of Hawai'i assistants have attended workouts, as have coaches from Mainland schools.

At least one player has already accepted a scholarship offer. Pac-Five linebacker Brashton Satele, who attends Word of Life, said he will sign with UH. His father is former UH player Alvis Satele and his mother is former Rainbow Wahine volleyball player Lee Ann (Pestana) Satele.

Several all-stars have been offered scholarships by Division I programs, but have yet to make verbal commitments.

The West team is made up of OIA schools in the Western Division, including White Conference schools that fall in the geographical area. The three Interscholastic League of Honolulu schools in the West are Damien, Kamehameha and Punahou. That means players who just bumped shoulder pads in Friday's state championship, Leilehua and Kamehameha, now find themselves on the same team. Division II state champion Campbell also is represented in the West.

The East has teams from the OIA East, as well as Division II teams from the geographical area. The ILH's Iolani, Pac-Five and Saint Louis also are part of the East team.

Each team has 50 players.

Farrington's Randall Okimoto is the head coach for the East. He is assisted by Iolani's Wendell Look, Pac-Five's Kip Botelho, Castle's Nelson Maeda, Roosevelt's Lester Parrilla, Kaiser's David Maeva and Kalani's Greg Taguchi.

The West is led by Damien co-coaches Rudy Alejo and Dean Nakagawa. They are assisted by Punahou's Kale Ane, Nanakuli's Al Beaver, 'Aiea's Wendell Say, Mililani's James Millwood and Kapolei's Darren Hernandez.
