BYUH's Porter earns community award
Brigham Young-Hawai'i tennis coach David Porter has been named a sectional winner of the USTA/ITA Community Service Award by the United States Tennis Association and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The award honors an ITA coach for significant contributions in developing community-based tennis programs through community centers, schools, parks, community tennis associations, inner city, suburban, or rural programs.
Porter, who has coached BYUH's men's and women's teams to nine national championships, received the award certificate for the USTA Hawai'i Pacific section based on multiple community outreach efforts.
Porter has provided court time and practice help for Kahuku High, which has no courts of its own, donated used equipment to three different elementary schools, organized an on-campus tennis club at BYUH, conducted a developmental coaches workshop, and provided courts for an elementary school's fourth grade class for an introduction to tennis.
