Luke named chairwoman of House Judiciary Committee

Advertiser Capitol Bureau

Sylvia Luke

Attorney Sylvia Luke will head the key Judiciary Committee in the state House of Representatives, according to a memorandum from House Speaker Calvin Say's office that establishes new committee assignments.

Luke, D-26th (Punchbowl, Pacific Hts., Nu'uanu Valley), and House vice speaker in recent years, takes over from Eric Hamakawa, who chose not to run for re-election. Blake Oshiro, D-33rd (Halawa, 'Aiea, Pearlridge) will remain as vice chair of the committee, as well as serve as majority floor leader this session.

The majority Democrats in the House outnumber Republicans 41-10. There will now be 19 standing House committees, compared with 17 during the 2003-04 Legislature.
