PacWest names top coaches

Hawai'i Pacific volleyball coach Tita Ahuna and Brigham Young-Hawai'i cross country coach Norman Kaluhiokalani have been named Pacific West Conference Coaches of the Year for the fall seasons.

Ahuna guided HPU to its second straight PacWest championship and NCAA Tournament berth to earn her second Coach of the Year award in as many years. The Sea Warriors advanced to the Pacific Region semifinals and finished with a 21-4 overall record.

Ahuna is the all-time winningest coach in HPU volleyball history and has two NCAA national championships.

Kaluhiokalani coached both Seasiders cross country teams to the inaugural PacWest championships. Kaluhiokalani, who started the BYUH program, has been at the helm for 28 years.

Seasider Chelsea Smith won back-to-back national individual titles under Kaluhiokalani.



GOLF

Hualalai team wins four-ball tournament

Hualalai's Kitt Felte and Jake Belveal used their home-course knowledge to win the Aloha Section PGA E-Z-GO Head Professional/Assistant Professional Championship yesterday at the Hualalai Golf Club on the Big Island.

Felte and Belveal, who started the day two strokes behind leaders Andrew Feldmann and Stephen Bell of Oahu Country Club, shot an 8-under-par 64 to finish at 17-under 127 and win the first-place prize of $2,500.

Feldmann and Bell (67—128) tied for second with Felt, who also teamed with Chris Keiter to shoot 66—128 in the 36-hole four-ball stroke play event that drew 31 teams.



BASKETBALL

It's 'White-Out' Saturday for UH

Saturday's men's basketball game between the University of Hawai'i and Saint Mary's has been designated a "White-Out" night based on results of a fan poll on the hawaiiathletics.com Web site.

Fans attending the game at the Stan Sheriff Center will be encouraged to wear white shirts. Hawai'i's last home game against Southern Illinois on Nov. 29 was a "Black-Out" night.

White-Out received 1,832 votes, Green-Out got 1,091, and Black-Out finished with 485.



TENNIS

Foundation to honor its Juniors of 2004

The Hawai'i-Pacific Tennis Foundation will honor Holden Au, Zachary Ellis and Andrew Murakami as its 2004 Juniors of the Year at banquet Dec. 19.

Au is a Mililani High sophomore, Murakami is a Leilehua High sophomore and Ellis is a 10-year-old from Waipahu.

The three will each receive an award during ceremonies at the foundation's annual meeting and banquet at the Pacific Beach Hotel's Neptune's Garden Restaurant.

Tickets for the banquet, which starts at 6 p.m. and features speaker Kent Keith, are $65. For reservations or more information on the event, which will also feature live and silent auctions, call 677-1334 or e-mail dav@hawaiitennis.org

Volunteers sought for wheelchair event

The Hawai'i-Pacific Tennis Foundation will host a professional International Tennis Federation Wheelchair Open tournament, Oct. 12 to 16, 2005 at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

The wheelchair tennis tour features 119 tournaments in 27 countries. Players can earn international rankings points and prize money. The top male and female players are honored at a dinner at the end of the year.

The Hawai'i-Pacific Tennis Foundation is seeking volunteers for the Hawai'i tournament to help with administration, player parties, transportation and lodging.
