Honors for tech firms, academia

Gov. Linda Lingle will host an event today at the State Art Museum to recognize the contributions Hawai'i's high-tech companies and universities are making to the local economy.

Honorees will include representatives from Hoku Scientific, Academy of Creative Media, Oceanit, Hawaii Biotech, Ventana Capital Management and the University of Hawai'i.



Home Depot opening in Hilo

The Home Depot will create more than 140 jobs with the opening of its newest store Thursday in Hilo. The opening will bring to seven the number of stores the retailer has in Hawai'i, where it employs more than 1,200 people.

To commemorate the store's grand opening, Home Depot will host a special "Neighborhood Night" for the community from 6 p.m to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The new store will follow Home Depot's latest floor plan, with a home decor section, more than 35,000 products, tool rental services and an outdoor garden area.



Credit union gives $1M back

Hawaii State Federal Credit Union said yesterday it has returned $1 million to members in the form of bonus dividends and loan interest rebates.

The bonuses and rebates were based on actual dividends earned and interest paid from Jan. 1 through Sept. 30. It was the ninth consecutive year that the credit union has been able to offer the program to members, said Deborah Kim, credit union president. Since 1996, HSFCU members have received more than $28 million in bonus dividends and interest rebates.



Island Air offers online discount

Starting today Island Air is offering a 10 percent discount to customers who book their flights online. Tickets can be booked at the carrier's Web site: www.islandair.com.

Island Air offers 94 daily interisland flights to Honolulu; Kaua'i; Moloka'i; Lana'i; Kapalua and Kahului on Maui; and Kona and Hilo on the Big Island.
