Harris bids farewell in televised speech

Associated Press

Mayor Jeremy Harris will give a televised farewell speech next week to cap off the decade he has led the city.

Mayor Jeremy Harris

Harris will make the "Year-end Address" at the city's historic Mission Memorial Auditorium on Dec. 16, from 6:30-7 p.m., and the event will be broadcast live on KHON2, city spokeswoman Carol Costa said.

Harris was Mayor Frank Fasi's managing director, and automatically became mayor in 1994 after Fasi resigned mid-term to make an unsuccessful run for governor.

Harris later won a special election to complete the remainder of Fasi's term, and was re-elected twice. Term limits precluded him from running again, and Mayor-elect Mufi Hannemann will succeed him in early January.

Harris has not said what he will do after leaving City Hall, other than to spend time with his family.

Costa said the city will spend $3,000 to televise the speech, and that the money will come from the Customer Service department's communications budget.
