Former champions in Super Brawl 38

Advertiser Staff

Former heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia and Waipahu's Falaniko Vitale will headline the Super Brawl 38 ultimate fighting card tomorrow at Blaisdell Arena.

The nine-bout card will begin at 7 p.m.

SUPER BRAWL 38

WHERE: Blaisdell Arena.

WHEN: 7 p.m., tomorrow.

TICKETS: Tickets: $75 ringside/floor; $44 riser; $34 reserved; $20 for students (with high school or college ID) and military.

Tickets available at Blaisdell or via Ticketmasters.

INFORMATION: 375-1645 or www.superbrawl.tv/news.htm

The 6-foot-8, 290-pound Sylvia (15-1) will take on Wes Sims (6-5), who stands 6 feet 10 and weighs 270 pounds.

Sylvia made his Ultimate Fighting Champion debut by defeating Hawai'i's Wesley "Cabbage" Correira in 2002. He won each of his subsequent fights by knockout before losing to Frank Mir in June because of an arm injury.

Vitale (18-3), a Super Brawl and UFC veteran, will go up in weight (from 185 to 200) to meet Cincinnati's Ron Fields (14-8).

A victory by Vitale could put him in the position to compete for the Super Brawl middleweight title, currently held by Japan's Masanori Suda.

Suda won the title belt from mixed martial arts star Egan Inoue at the sold-out Super Brawl 29 in 2003. At that time, Vitale was Inoue's most promising student.

"Niko is overdue this opportunity (to fight Suda)," Super Brawl founder T. Jay Thompson said. "He's fought the best and he's beat the best."

Two top UFC middleweights (185 pounds), Rich Franklin (15-1) and Curtis Stout (7-3-1), will fight each other on tomorrow's card.

CLINIC

Sharpshooting Olympians on Lana'i

Olympic gold medalist Kim Rhode, bronze medalist Lance Bade and U.S. shooting national team coach Lloyd Woodhouse will hold a shooting clinic for Lana'i Pine instructors tomorrow.

The clinic will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Lana'i Pine Sporting Clays, Air Rifles and Archery Range.

Rhode won the gold in 2004 and 1996 in women's double trap and a bronze in the 2000 double trap. She is a six-time national champion.

Bade won a bronze in 1996 in trap.

BOXING

12-bout amateur card featured at Palolo

A Hawai'i USA amateur boxing card will be held 6 p.m. tomorrow at Palolo Recreation Center.

Amateur boxers from around the state will participate in a 12-bout tune-up for the state tournament in January.

Admission is $10, with children 7-and-under free.
