Bicyclist dies after being hit by pickup truck

Advertiser Staff

A 46-year-old man was struck and killed as he rode his bicycle along Kalaeloa Boulevard in Campbell Industrial Park yesterday morning.

Police said the bicyclist was heading north in the right lane of Kalaeloa when he was hit by a 1988 Nissan pickup truck, which also was in the right lane. The accident occurred at 6:13 a.m. near Opakapaka Street, police said.

The bicyclist was taken in critical condition to St. Francis Medical Center-West, where he later died of his injuries. The 40-year-old driver of the pickup was not injured and his 45-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries, police said.

Police said it was dark when the accident occurred, and the bicyclist was dressed in black and his bike did not have reflectors or lights. The cause of the accident remained under investigation.

Yesterday's fatality was the 62nd so far this year on O'ahu, compared with 78 during the same period last year.
