O'ahu families deck out homes with holiday cheer

 •  Retirement home lobby gets holiday makeover

By Zenaida Serrano
Advertiser Staff Writer

One of the great things about this time of year is, wherever you turn, Christmas is there.

If you're in search of that feel-good spirit, just look around you. You'll likely find it at work, in the form of golden garlands strung on cubicles and merry little Christmas trees on decked-out desktops. Or at the grocery store, amid aisles of colorful candies and treats promising a sugary sweet holiday.

One sure place to look: your very own neighborhood, where mechanical lawn reindeer near your house offer friendly competition to the dancing Santa Claus down the street.

Homes across O'ahu are once again dressed up for the season, and The Advertiser has compiled its annual list of must-see displays, such as the Hawaiian-themed snowman family fronting Roger Mitchell's Kapahulu home, or the manger scene in the yard of the Suster family of 'Ewa Beach.

Common additions to many homes this year are characters from "The Incredibles," "Yu-Gi-Oh" and "Bratz." Also a big hit are inflatables, including the Santa in Kailua and the igloo with penguins in Kane'ohe.

Veteran decorators John and Isabel Silva of Kapalama are back with their annual offerings: sleigh of lights, elves, gingerbread house and train, to name a few. And the Rillamas family of Waialua returns with Rudolph and the other reindeer, a miniature Christmas village, lighted candy canes and more.

The regulars are joined by relative newbies, like the Piamonte family of Kapolei. Ann Piamonte, daughter of the Kapalama Silvas, has a display of lighted reindeer, wooden cutouts of animated characters and a nativity scene. While it pales in comparison to her parents' decor, her display will likely become a seasonal tradition that will grow, given time.

So put down that shopping list, step slowly away from the wrapping paper and take a much-needed break. Load the 'ohana in the car for a leisurely drive because Christmas is out there, and the bright lights and sights of the season await you.

• Downtown — The 20th annual Honolulu City Lights will be on display throughout the downtown area nightly through Jan. 2 and carries the theme "20 Years of Sparkle." Joining the giant Santa and Tutu Mele sculptures this year will be four oversized pop-up Christmas cards depicting Island Christmas moments from the past. The tree and wreath displays inside Honolulu Hale can be viewed 8 a.m.-11 p.m. daily through Jan. 2.

• Kapalama — 1420 Kapalama Ave. Visitors to John and Isabel Silva's home will find a sleigh with lights, penguins, a Hawaiian Santa, a snowman, elves, reindeer, as well as a gingerbread house, gingerbread train, tree and lighted wreath, and a lighted display centered on a nativity scene.
