Airport signs will be improved

Gov. Linda Lingle on Friday released nearly $714,000 to improve signage at Honolulu International Airport.
The project will involve installing directories throughout the airport and parking structure. Signs will point passengers to the ticket lobbies, gates, agriculture and security checkpoints, restaurants, airline lounges, baggage claim areas and ground transportation.
The project, which is also receiving more than $661,000 in federal money, is scheduled for completion in July.
2 freeway lanes closing for repair
The two right lanes of the westbound Moanalua Freeway will be closed for resurfacing from 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. today through Thursday morning from the Likelike Highway off-ramp to Middle Street. The Middle Street off-ramp and Airport off-ramp will also be closed.
Motorists who are going to the airport should use either Dillingham Boulevard or Nimitz Highway.
There will be no lane closures during the holidays, from Dec. 16 to Jan. 4.

Cambodian group seeks donations
A Cambodian group sponsored by a Honolulu church is holding a dinner and a donations drive to benefit a Christmas relief mission to Cambodia. The event will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at McCoy Pavilion, Ala Moana Beach Park.
The Khemaras Center, sponsored by the University Avenue Baptist Church, hopes to raise $10,000 to buy food and medicine for the poor in Cambodia, said event planner Hongly Khuy.
Each Christmas season, a UABC team goes to Cambodia to distribute rice and medications to the poor.
Those attending today's event may bring donations in any amount, Khuy said. Checks should be made payable to: UABC/Khemaras Center.

HECO repairing overhead cables
Hawaiian Electric Co. will be making cable repairs on the H-1 Freeway west of Campbell Junction this week that will require brief closings of the freeway.
The first closure, between the Kahe Power Plant and Campbell Industrial Park, will take place mid-morning tomorrow and is expected to last about 20 minutes while crews remove a section of cable that crosses the freeway.
The second closure will be mid-morning Wednesday for about 15 minutes while a helicopter brings in a pull wire that will be used to install a new cable.
The construction area will be a reduced-speed zone for the duration of the project, which is expected to be done by Dec. 20.
Civil Defense testing siren
The O'ahu Civil Defense Agency will test its siren warning system at 'Ewa Elementary School tomorrow, beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing through the morning.
The test is in response to reports from citizens that the siren did not workproperly when tested Dec. 1.
Siren malfunctions are not unusual and the problem sirens can be quickly identified for repair.
Sirens are just one way Civil Defense warns of emergencies. Other methods include the Emergency Alert System broadcasts and vehicle public address systems.
No emergency actions are required during this test.
Anyone noticing a problem with the sirens on O'ahu during regularly monthly testing can call Civil Defense at 523-4121.

Castle & Cooke fulfills pledge
Castle & Cooke presented $20,000 to Mililani Mauka Elementary School last week to fulfill a pledge of a sizeable donation if students, parents and faculty could raise a similar amount.
School Principal Carol Petersen said two fund-raisers netted more than $25,000.
NEIGHBOR ISLAND
Insurance group donates $32,000
WAILEA, Maui The Insurance Conference Planners Association donated $32,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of Maui during the group's annual meeting last month at the Grand Wailea Resort.
Colin Hanlon, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Maui, said the money willbe used to buya van for the organization's outreach program and for educational tutoring and sports and arts activities.

'Aina Haina Public Library will host a discussion on underage drinking by the Coalition for a DrugiFree Hawai'i at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the library's meeting room.
