ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Make a garland

Advertiser Staff

Those darn insert cards in magazines can be a nuisance, but the editors at Organic Style magazine have come up with a fun way to recycle them for the holidays: fold the inserts into cranes and string them together for an easy yuletide garland.

Reader's Tip

In the midst of the day-to-day chaos we call life, it's easy to forget about the things that should really matter to us: taking time to nurture ourselves, our families, our homes and our environment.

Every Monday, look here in Island Life for a weekly feature that offers quick tips, fun facts and useful resources to help make life less complicated and the planet greener.

If you have a tidbit to share — from organization tricks to recycling tips — e-mail zserrano@honoluluadvertiser.com, and include your name and phone number.

Keep it simple

Lack of time, money and the pressures of gift giving are among the top causes of holiday stress, reports the Hawai'i Psychological Association.

But don't let the season get the best of you.

The association offers advice on how to deal with the dreaded s-word:

• Set realistic goals. Take small, concrete steps to deal with holiday tasks instead of overwhelming yourself with far-reaching goals.

• Engage in activities (like massage, left) that you enjoy and find relaxing.

• Keep things in perspective.
