UH-Hilo beats HPU in OT, 89-79

Esene Osadonor scored 25 points and Alex Cabagnot added 19, including eight in overtime, as Hawai'i-Hilo defeated visiting Hawai'i Pacific, 89-79, last night at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

The Vulcans (5-1) shot 29 of 37 from the free-throw line, hitting 9 of 10 in overtime to pull away from a 74-74 tie at the end of regulation.

The Sea Warriors (3-3) made 7 of 12 free-throw attempts.

Justin Dobson, who finished with 15 points for Hilo, hit a basket with 17 seconds left in regulation to tie it at 74.

Audrius Peciukas hit all nine of his shots to finish with 23 points and 11 rebounds for HPU. Dante Sykes added 20 and Aleksandar Bojic 10 for the Sea Warriors.



SUPER BRAWL

Sylvia defeats Sims in main event

Tim Sylvia defeated Wes Sims in the main event of Super Brawl 38 at the Blaisdell Center Arena Saturday night.

Midway through the first round, Syliva trapped Sims in the corner of the ring and unleashed a flurry of punches. The referee stopped the bout and awarded the victory to Sylvia.

Sylvia, who is from Iowa, improved to 16-1. He is now expected to fight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight title.

Sims, who is from Ohio, dropped to 6-7 with his second loss in Honolulu in the last two months.

In another bout, Hawai'i's Falaniko Vitale remained in contention for a championship bout by defeating Ron Fields of Ohio.

Vitale forced Fields to submit with a leg-lock in the first round. Vitale improved to 19-3, and is expected to fight for a Super Brawl championship soon.

In other bouts: Ed Nawalu defeated Kevin DeLima by unanimous decision; Chris Dawson defeated Bryson Kamaka by unanimous decision; Ray Lizama defeated Kai Kamaka by first-round TKO; Reuben Villarreal defeated Andre Roberts by decision; Joe Jordan defeated Kolo Koka by split decision; Rich Franklin defeated Curtis Stout by second-round choke submission.



GOLF

Watabu, Chun capture junior titles

Kellen Watabu and Mari Chun won the 15-18 age divisions of the Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association's Tournament of Champions yesterday at Wailea Golf Club on Maui.

Watabu beat Sean Maekawa in a playoff after they each shot 148.

Other boys' winners were: Tadd Fujikawa (ages 13-14), Alika Bell (11-12) and Ryan Kuroiwa (10-younger)

Chun shot 143 to beat Stephanie Kono by three strokes in the girls' division.

Other girls' winners were: Elyse Okada (13-14), Dayna Bersamin (11-12) and Kyung Kim (10-younger).
