Party to benefit Hawai'i troops

A party to benefit the "Home for the Holidays" campaign to bring Hawai'i National Guard troops home from training in Texas this Christmas will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Zanzabar Night Club, 2255 Kuhio Ave. Admission is $10.

Ame Frey, whose husband is flying combat helicopters in Iraq, started the campaign after seeing news reports about some Hawai'i National Guard members who couldn't afford the airfare to come home.

More than 2,500 members from the Guard's 29th Infantry Brigade are training at Fort Bliss, Texas. After a holiday break, Guard members will be sent to Fort Polk, La., before deploying to Iraq in February.

Frey said she has raised enough money to bring home 74 soldiers. They will return Dec. 20 and 21 and fly back to the Mainland on Jan. 2. To donate, call Frey at 235-6832.

Attorney given 10-year sentence

A Honolulu attorney was sentenced yesterday to 10 years in prison after pleading no contest to 14 criminal counts, including theft and money laundering.

Jerrold Y. Chun, 56, was accused of orchestrating a scheme to steal nearly $8 million while liquidating two failed hurricane insurance companies. He had pleaded no contest to three counts of first-degree theft, one count of unlawful operation of a business, and 10 counts of money laundering.

Yesterday, a Circuit Court judge sentenced Chun to concurrent 10-year prison terms.

Chun was hired by the state insurance commissioner to handle the liquidation of HUI/UNICO. In 1992, Hawaiian Underwriters Insurance Co. and United National Insurance Co. became HUI/UNICO after they were taken over by the commissioner. The number of insurance claims against the firms exceeded available resources because of Hurricane 'Iniki, according to the attorney general's office.

Chun was accused of using three transactions in June and July 2003 to amass $7.9 million by requesting more money than was needed to pay off claims and then pocketing the surplus.
