Viloria to fight Thursday, opponent willing

The most significant fight of Brian Viloria's career could happen on Thursday.

BRIAN VILLORIA

Based on recent history, the emphasis is on could.

Gary Gittelsohn, Viloria's manager, said the Waipahu boxer has been assured a main event bout for a Thursday card that will be televised on HBO Latino in the Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles.

"I hate to say it's a certainty because we've all seen how reluctant opponents are to fight Brian," Gittelsohn said. "But we're counting on being there on Thursday, we're just not sure which opponent we'll get."

Gittelsohn said Viloria will likely fight either Angel Priolo of Colombia or Francisco Arce of Mexico in a flyweight bout (112 pounds).

Priolo is 30-1, and was originally scheduled to fight Fernando Montiel in the main event on Thursday.

However, Montiel recently withdrew because of an illness.

Gittelsohn, who also manages Montiel, offered Viloria as a replacement.

"Brian needs to get back in the ring, and this opportunity arose so we wanted to take advantage of it," Gittelsohn said.

Gittelsohn said he has asked the WBC to recognize a Viloria-Priolo bout as a qualifier for a world championship bout.

Viloria is ranked No. 2 by the WBC; Priolo is No. 9. Gittelsohn said the WBC's No. 1 contender, Luis Maldonado, has been reluctant to fight Viloria.

If the WBC does not recognize the Viloria-Priolo bout, then Arce would likely become Viloria's opponent on Thursday. Arce is 12-1 with four knockouts.

"If Brian does wind up fighting Arce, and if he comes out victorious and looks impressive doing it, we'll push for a championship fight soon after," Gittelsohn said.

Viloria is 15-0 with nine knockouts, but has not fought since June 4.

He was supposed to fight in September and on Dec. 4, but both those bouts were canceled when opponents withdrew just days before the event.

"It's certainly discouraging to be put in those situations," Gittelsohn said. "But Brian is the best known flyweight in the world and it's just become really difficult to finalize opponents."
