Pearl Country Club pro David Ishii will keep his string of playing in every Sony Open in Hawai'i after winning the Aloha Section PGA members-only qualifying yesterday at Waialae Country Club.
Carll earned the other pro berth in the Sony Open, which has been played at Waialae since 1999.
Jonathan Mathias, an Air Force staff sergeant, shot 72 to beat out 11 other members of the Governor's Cup amateur team and earn the lone amateur spot awarded yesterday.
Nick Mason, a University of Hawai'i-Hilo golfer, just missed after shooting 73.
Professional John Lynch earned a Sony spot as the Aloha Section PGA player of the year and 15-year-old Michelle Wie received a sponsor's exemption.
Four additional Sony spots will be awarded after an open qualifier on Jan. 10 at Waialae.
The Sony Open is Jan. 13 to 16.
The Sony Open in Hawai'i is seeking volunteers for its tournament, which will be played Jan. 13 to 16 at Waialae Country Club.
Volunteers are needed for positions as marshals, transporters, and Shotlink laser scorers.
Marshals guide spectators to proper locations on the course and maintain rules and regulations, while transporters require a valid Hawai'i driver's license and ferry viewers from the course to their hotels. Shotlink scoring is a new technological asset that paints a laser over a pro's shot on television.
More than 1,200 volunteers are needed. For more information, call 792-9303 or e-mail friend@friendsofhawaii.org.
Ishii, who plays on the Japan Golf Tour, shot a 5-under-par 67 for a two-stroke victory over Kevin Carll, a pro at the Ko Olina Golf Club.
