UH's Wallace undergoes angioplasty

Advertiser Staff

University of Hawai'i basketball coach Riley Wallace today underwent an angioplasty, and will be released from the hospital tomorrow.

"Everything went perfect," said Wallace, who plans to resume coaching Friday.

An angioplasty is a procedure in which a stent — a tube — is inserted into an artery to improve blood flow. Wallace said one of his arteries was "99 percent" blocked.

Wallace underwent a similar procedure in 1998.

The UH basketball team is 5-0 and its next game will be Monday against Long Beach State in the Rainbow Classic.

Wallace, a passionate St. Louis Cardinals' fan, said everything "was going great until I saw (that Cardinal shortstop Edgar) Renteria is going to Boston. Damn."
