Vijay Singh, who finished the U.S. PGA Tour season with nine wins, $10.9 million in earnings and golf's No. 1 ranking, was named European player of the year, adding to the U.S plaudit he earned Dec. 6.

"It's a wonderful honor to be named as the European Tour golfer of the year for the first time," Singh said in an e-mailed European Tour statement. "This accolade completes a very special double for me after winning the player of the year award in the U.S. only last week."

Singh beat Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain, who won four times in Europe this year, European money-list winner Ernie Els, U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen and Ryder Cup-winning captain Bernhard Langer to become the ninth recipient of the award, voted for by a panel of golf writers and Tour officials.

Singh in September ended eight-time major championship winner Tiger Woods' five-year reign as world No. 1. The 41-year-old Fijian won the U.S. PGA Championship in August, his third major, and became the first golfer to earn more than $10 million in a year with his victory in October's Chrysler Championship.
