Rally planned for typhoon victims

A rally to benefit typhoon victims in the Philippines will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Filipino Community Center, 94-428 Mokuola St. in Waipahu.

A series of typhoons devastated the Quezon Province in southeastern Luzon last month, causing landslides and killing thousands of people.

Donations will be accepted at the rally or checks, made payable to the Filcom Center Typhoon Victims fund, can be mailed to the Waipahu address.

Annual seat belt survey begins

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police are asking motorists to be on the lookout for survey teams working on the state's annual seat belt survey from now through February.

The survey uses two observation team members stationed at various sites to monitor seat belt use.

The survey is sponsored by the state Department of Transportation, and will be conducted by the University of Hawai'i Department of Urban and Regional Planning.



Kuhio work pau, so city celebrates

The city will celebrate the completion of improvements to Kuhio Avenue Sunday with a mini-Brunch on the Beach, free TheTransit shuttle rides and live entertainment.

"Christmas Brunch on Kuhio Avenue" will start at 10 a.m. at King Kalakaua Park at the 'Ewa end of Kuhio Avenue.

Entertainment includes Na Leo Pilimehana, the Royal Hawaiian Band Glee Club, Halau Hula 'O Hokulani and a visit from Santa.

Halau Hula 'O Hokulani, under the direction of kumu hula Hokulani DeRego, will preview their annual Christmas show.

The public is asked to park at either the Waikiki Shell or Kapi'olani Park and catch TheTransit free shuttles from the Kapahulu Avenue trolley stop to the park site. The rides will start at 9:30 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m.



Caroling under the electric tree

A Community Christmas Caroling will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sunday under the 45-foot electric tree at Pu'u o Kaimuki Mini Park behind the fire station at the end of Koko Head Avenue.

The event is a gathering of residents to celebrate the holidays under the tree which has 16 new 50-foot strands of green and white lights.

The tree nearly went dark this year, but was rescued at the last minute by residents and Hawaiian Electric Co.

A fund-raising campaign to pay for the lights and tree maintenance is under way in the community and the freshman class at Sacred Hearts has placed collection boxes in a number of area businesses.

'Polar Express' for storytime

A Christmas Storytime program with a reading of The Polar Express, the children's story by Chris Van Allsburg, will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Waialua Public Library.

Admission is free.

There will be a Christmas craft session for children. Refreshments will be served.

The program is one hour and suitable for all ages.

The library is at 67-068 Kealohanui Street. Call 637-8286.



Event will help grieving kids

A free event to help children who are grieving during the holidays will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Central Union Church, 1660 S. Beretania St.

The event, called Napuaokamakaola or Living Through the Eyes of Children, will encourage children or young adults to share the experiences of loved ones who have died and to celebrate their lives, sharing Christmas in their honor.

The program is sponsored by the Reid Richards Foundation, Hospice Hawai'i, St. Francis Hospice, Central Union Church and the Queen Lili'uokalani Children's Center.

Police seek help in man's death

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — Police are asking the public's help in their investigation into the death of a man last week.

Police have made an arrest in the case, but still need more information.

Doctors at Wilcox Hospital called police after a man turned up on Dec. 9 with head injuries.

After police interviewed the injured man, they went to the Puhi home of Frank Yoro, 62, where they had been told an assault had occurred.

At the home, they found Yoro, who also had head injuries. They took Yoro to the hospital, where he died Dec. 10.

Police arrested the first man, but later released him pending further investigation.
