TRAIL WORK ON MAUI The Hawai'i Service Trip Program, in conjunction with the state's Na Ala Hele Program, is sponsoring a one-week volunteer service trip to build and restore trails at Waikamoi, Maui, Jan. 2-8. Participants must be in good physical condition and willing to work hard. The $200 cost ($150 for students) includes airfare, food and lodging. WHALE COUNT 2005 Volunteer site leaders are needed on O'ahu and the Big Island for the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary's statewide ocean count Jan. 29, Feb. 26 and March 26. Leaders must be available for training from 2 to 4:30 p.m. or 6 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 15. MAKAPU'U HIKE The Sierra Club membership recruitment hike will be Sunday at Makapu'u. Meet at 5:30 p.m. at the trailhead for the easy, one-mile hike. Bring flashlight and snacks to watch the moon rise from the lookout. Reduced $25 membership offered to participants. TOUR DE TRASH Sign up for a "Tour de Trash" bus tour of O'ahu's trashier side, provided by the City and County of Honolulu's Refuse Division. The "Workplace Recycling" tour from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 20, starts and finishes at the Sheraton Waikiki, whose owner saves $100,000 per year in disposal costs by recycling at its O'ahu properties. Other stops include Hickam Air Force Base's materials recovery facility; the Ke'ehi Transfer Station on Middle Street; the Hawai'i Convention Center's recycling system; the Hilton Hawaiian Village, which has integrated recycling into every building; Island Recycling's multimaterial processing facility; and Gyotaku Japanese Restaurant's recycling operations. BIRDWATCHING WITH SIERRA CLUB See native and migratory birds during an easy, two-mile hike at the Campbell Wildlife Refuge on Jan. 22. Reservations are required; call Annette Kaohelaulii at 235-5431.

FREE MULCH ON BIG ISLAND Help yourself to free mulch from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily at a new public pickup area adjacent to the Kealakehe Transfer Station, or from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at the Hilo Transfer Station. The county Department of Environmental Management sponsors the free mulch program. Loading assistance is available only at the Hilo location at a cost of $10 to $40 depending on vehicle size. Deliveries of large truckloads of mulch to homes, businesses or farms can be arranged by calling the Big Island Recycling representative at (808) 306-1876.
