Holiday films push weekend box office above $70 million

"Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events," starring Jim Carrey, was the weekend's top-grossing film in U.S. and Canadian theaters with an estimated $30.2 million in ticket sales, according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations Co.

Following up were the sequel, "Ocean's Twelve" ($18.3 million), "Spanglish" (pictured), starring Adam Sandler ($9 million), "The Polar Express," created by Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis and based on the book of the same name ($8.55 million) and, in fifth place, "Blade: Trinity," from Time Warner's New Line Cinema studio ($6.6 million). Bringing up the rear: "National Treasure," "Christmas with the Kranks," "Flight of the Phoenix," "Closer" and "The Incredibles."
