Tonight's Must-See

Tonight on KHNL News 8

The Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Basketball Classic continues at the Stan Sheriff Center. Watch all the action on K5 the Home Team, then join Russell Yamanoha with the highlights on KHNL News 8 at 10.

"Kennedy Center Honors," 8 p.m., CBS. Each year, this special is beautifully crafted with strong tributes and powerful music. This year's tributes flow from Jack Nicholson (for actor Warren Beatty), Steven Spielberg (composer John Williams) and Sean Combs (actors Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee). The Davis-Dee portion includes a spiritual sung by Audra McDonald and two choral groups. A tribute to opera diva Joan Sutherland includes a duet by Thomas Hampson and Paul Groves. Beatty hears a song dedicated to his four young children — opera's Renée Fleming singing "Over the Rainbow." Then there's Williams, whose music has filled classic movies. Itzhak Perlman performs his "Schindler's List" solo; the Marine Band does a movie medley. An Elton John tribute is performed by Billy Joel, Fantasia, Robert Downey Jr., Kid Rock and Heather Headley.

Of Note

"Mission: Space," 7 p.m., Pax TV. LeVar Burton, who did his space exploration in "Star Trek: The Next Generation," hosts this hour. It includes interviews with astronauts, news footage and a look at the "Mission: Space" portion of Disney World's Epcot Center.

"My Wife and Kids," 7 p.m., ABC. This is the first half of a rerun in which Michael frets about a fantasy basketball camp with Michael Jordan.

"The George Lopez Show," 7:30 p.m., ABC. Here's a rerun of the season-opener, in which an angry and fretful George searches for his runaway daughter. There are serious moments, but there are also funny guest bits by Carrot Top and Chingy, playing themselves.

"According to Jim," 8 p.m., ABC. Jim's wife chooses the Christmas present that her sister gives him. When he likes it, however, the sister wants all the credit.

"Father of the Pride," 8 p.m., NBC. After weeks on the shelf, this animated series finally returns with a new episode. Larry, recovering from an injury, soon tires of his father-in-law and slips him some of his medication.
