QUICK BITES
New macadamia treats introduced

Advertiser Staff

Two local confectionary companies have new products this holiday season: Island Princess created Wasabi Macadamia Nuts in the tradition of Japan's popular iso peanuts. Buttery roasted nuts are coated with a mixture that begins with fresh grated wasabi from Japan. The nuts join an Island Princess line of flavored nuts including Maui onion, sweet chili, nori, curry, honey-roasted and lightly salted.

Hawaiian Host has released a sugar-free line of Macadamia Clusters, MacNut Crunch and Dark Chocolate Macadamia Clusters, in snack bags that retail between $4 and $5. The chocolates are sweetened with maltitol, a sugar alcohol made from plant starch. Though they are carbohydrates and contain calories, sugar alcohols are absorbed more slowly than conventional sugars and have less effect on blood glucose levels. A four-piece serving of these candies has 180 to 190 calories.
