Officer indicted in drug sting

A federal grand jury indicted Honolulu police officer Harold Cabbab Jr. yesterday on a charge of attempting to possess crystal methamphetamine.

A conviction carries a prison term of 10 years to life in prison.

Cabbab, a former University of Hawai'i baseball player, was arrested as a result of a sting operation. He is accused of stealing what he thought was crystal methamphetamine from a storage locker Dec. 10.

Cabbab thought he would make about $100,000 by stealing the ice from a drug dealer, but actually was planning the theft with an individual who was cooperating with law enforcement, according to a federal affidavit filed to support the charge.

Cabbab is being held without bail.



Suspect sought in bank robbery

Police were looking for a man who robbed the Waipahu branch of City Bank yesterday.

At 12:45 p.m., the man, who police describe as 5 feet 9 and 160 pounds, with a medium build, brown hair and hazel eyes, entered the bank and stood in line. Police said the man pulled out a handgun and demanded money. The man wished the teller "Merry Christmas" and was last seen running on Pupukahi Street.

He wore a green baseball cap, dark blue sweater, denim shorts,and black slippers.

Shoplift suspect arrested at mall

A 39-year-old man may face robbery charges after what would have been a shoplifting incident at the Kahala Mall yesterday afternoon escalated into something more serious, police said.

Security guards at a mall store were attempting to detain the man on suspicion of shoplifting about 4:45 p.m. when he knocked one of the guards to the floor while trying to get away, police said.

Other security people were able to detain the man until police arrived and arrested him on suspicion of second-degree robbery.



Big Isle woman a theft suspect

Kona police arrested a 43-year-old woman yesterday on suspicion of theft after she allegedly used forged documents to obtain a new truck and a new sport-utility vehicle from a Kailua-Kona automobile dealer.

The suspect, who lives in Waimea, was being held in the Kona police cellblock pending further investigation by West Hawai'i Criminal Investigation Section detectives.

The woman allegedly used the forged documents to take possession of a blue 2005 Ford Expedition and a silver 2005 Ford F350 pickup truck, police said. The vehicles were valued at $91,484.

Police have seized the SUV and were looking for the pickup truck, which has temporary license plates.
