ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Harris to sign book at Bestsellers downtown

Advertiser Staff

Outgoing Mayor Jeremy Harris will sign copies of his book, "The Renaissance of Honolulu" ($19.95) at noon today at Bestsellers Books, Bishop Square downtown. The controversial book, published at taxpayer expense, is a 214-page, picture-filled history of city improvements over the past decade. The book reaches local bookstores this week. Harris leaves office Jan. 2 after 10 years as mayor and more than 30 years in public life.

HOME TIP

Use brown paper, iron to remove wax

The holidays mean more candles being lit in celebration for several families. It also means annoying drippings. If your candle wax has dripped onto the carpet or fabric, try covering the spot with brown paper (such as a grocery bag or butcher paper) and pressing with a hot iron. (For fine textiles, check with the manufacturer first.) If a stain remains, it's probably because of dye in the wax. Try a stain remover such as Zout, available at drug stores.

If the candle has dripped onto the furniture, try removing it by scraping with an old credit card. If some of the wax persists, be sure it's completely hardened before you try to lift it off. You can freeze it first by rubbing with an ice cube inside a plastic bag.
