Makiki man killed, gunman at large

By Curtis Lum
Advertiser Staff Writer

A 71-year-old man was fatally shot outside a Makiki apartment building last night and the gunman was at large, police said.

Police Lt. Robert Green said the victim was shot once in the head about 8:10 p.m. in the garage area of the building 1555 Pensacola St. The man was found lying next to a silver Toyota pickup truck. He was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where he died a short time later.

Police did not release the victim's name although Green said he believes the man was the apartment building's manager.

Green said there were no eyewitnesses and that police had no suspect description.

Police did not say what may have led to the shooting.

A man who lives in the building next door said he heard two men screaming at each other, then he heard a single "pop." The resident, who did not want to be named, said that when he got out of the shower he looked out from his balcony and saw police and an ambulance at the scene.

The shooting took place outside a three-story apartment building surrounded by high-rises on Pensacola Street, about a block mauka of the H-1 Freeway, near Hassinger Street.
