Heralding a new year
The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i is kicking off the new year with its annual 'Ohana Festival, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 9 at the center and at nearby Mo'ili'ili Field. The attractions include multicultural cuisine, entertainment on two stages, mochi pounding, cultural displays and demos, a craft fair featuring more than 30 crafters, a book sale, keiki make-and-take activities, games and rides. Former Hawai'i first lady Jean Ariyoshi will sign autographs of her new book, "Washington Place: A First Lady's Story." The festival's theme, which also is the center's motto, is "Honoring our heritage. Embracing our diversity. Sharing our future." Admission is free.
The Honolulu Symphony continues its Backstage Pass series Jan. 7 with the orchestra's "Romeo and Juliet" concert. The event, aimed at symphony fans in their 20s and 30s, includes a pre-concert buffet supper and cocktails, and champagne and dessert during intermission. The reception begins at 6:30 p.m., the concert at 8 p.m., at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Tickets are $50 and $85, and include the concert. 524-0815, ext. 256.
