Fatality forces highway to close

Police closed Farrington Highway in Waipahu in both directions late last night following a fatal pedestrian accident near Kahuamoku Place.
The road closure was announced at 10:50 p.m. Police first closed the westbound lanes, then closed all of Farrington Highway. No details were immediately available about the accident or the victim.
The Windward Ahupua'a Alliance will be accepting donations of beverage containers from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at the triangle median opposite the Model Airplane Field on Kapa'a Quarry Road. All types of uncrushed aluminum, glass and plastic beverage containers will be taken.
The drive is being conducted prior to the beverage container recycling program, to redeem marked containers for 5 cents, beginning Jan. 1, as a means to raise money for the group.
Unmarked containers will be donated to Castle High School, which sells them to a recycler.
The Windward Arts Council is seeking applications for its Arts Achievement Awards, worth $300 to recipients. Awards will be presented in six categories: instrumental and vocal music, theater, dance, creative writing, visual arts, and Hawaiian music, dance and chant.
To be eligible, students must be in high school, live on the Windward side and be recommended by their school or private arts teacher.

Awards will be presented at a public concert and exhibition April 24.
HILO, Hawai'i The Lyman Museum in Hilo is seeking volunteers and docents for an exhibition called "Grandfather's House: An Exhibition on Korea." The exhibit features a full-scale, hands-on replica of a 1930s Korean home and will open in February 2005.Training for docents and volunteers will begin in January, and interested volunteers can call Linda Collazo at 935-5021.
The public is invited to witness mochi pounding and taste the finished product Sunday at Aiea Hongwanji Mission, 99-186 Puakala St., in 'Aiea.
The pounding will start at 8 a.m. Aiea Hongwanji started doing the mochi pounding exhibition in 2001 as part of its centennial celebration.

Four students have been awarded prizes by the Honolulu Association of Insurance Women for their essays on the consequences of drinking and driving.
Students receive a certificate of achievement and a cash donation ranging from $25 to $75.
This is the fourth year the association has offered the contest. Of 22 entrants, the winners were:
