John Phillips resigned as head coach of the Tulsa men's basketball team yesterday.

Tulsa athletic director Judy MacLeod announced that assistant coach Alvin "Pooh" Williamson will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of this season. Phillips had a record of 61-42 in four seasons, but was 11-25 since last season.

"The last couple of months have been difficult," he said in a release from the school. "Sometimes, change can bring about growth."

Phillips guided Tulsa to two NCAA Tournament appearances, but the Golden Hurricane went 9-20 last season — ending a streak of 15 consecutive winning seasons.

Tulsa, which is 2-5 this season, is scheduled to play Oklahoma Tuesday, and then open WAC play on Thursday.
