'Meet the Fockers' a box-office winner

Millions of Americans went shopping for comedy over the weekend, giving the star-studded "Meet the Fockers" the record for the best single Christmas Day box office take, at $19.1 million (up from the previous record of $14 million earned Christmas Day last year by "The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King").
Top five ticket sales for the weekend in North American theaters, according to Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc.: "Meet the Fockers," $44.7 million; "Fat Albert," 12.7 million; "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events," $12.5 million; "The Aviator," $9.4 million; "Ocean's Twelve," $8.6 million.
An evening of poetry, open mike and jazz
Need something to do between holidays? Spoken-word spearheads Travis Thompson and Brenda Kwon ignite Hawai'i's poetry scene at 8 tonight with "re:Verses," an evening of featured poets, open mike, and jazz by DJ Mr. Nick. This all-ages event takes place on the last Tuesday of every month at The ARTS at Marks Garage. Featured poets for this month are Joy Harjo (pictured), Eric Chock, Darlene Rodrigues, Lumenz, Josh, and Omega 6. An open-mike session will follow. $5. 521-2903.
