No. 9 BYUH loses on road

J.T. Tipton had 11 points and 14 rebounds, and host Sonoma State withstood a late rally by No. 9 ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii to pull out an 88-79 victory yesterday at Rohnert Park, Calif.

Austin Smylie had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Seasiders (5-2), who trailed 73-48 with less than 10 minutes to play.

Thomas Watkins hit four 3-pointers to ignite a 31-12 run that allowed BYUH to close to 85-79 with 1:46 remaining. But the Seasiders missed their final four shots and the Seawolves sealed the win with three free throws.

BYUH All-American Jake Chrisman played only 19 minutes before fouling out after scoring 14 points.



Chaminade falls in OT

Northwest Nazarene rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit to edge host Chaminade, 94-92, yesterday at the Kaiser High School gym.

The Silverswords appeared to have secured the win when Chris Powell grabbed a rebound with three seconds left in overtime and Chaminade ahead by one.

Powell, who was fouled on the play, slammed the ball to the floor and was called for a technical.

David Lerschall sank two free throws to put Northwest Nazarene (5-5) ahead to stay while Powell missed two foul shots.

Zack Whiting had 27 points, nine assists and five rebounds for the Silverswords (6-4).



Hawai'i-Hilo rolls on

Alex Cabagnot scored 15 points and all 11 Hawai'i-Hilo players who played scored last night in an 80-57 victory over Pacific University at the Hilo civic.

Osadonor Esene added 14 points for the Vulcans (10-1).

Jared Strickland led the Boxers (1-7) from Forest Grove, Ore., with 13 points.
