A teenage girl and two men were in critical condition yesterday after a car hit a tree off Poi'pu Road in south Kaua'i.
Police said a 17-year old Kekaha girl was driving east on a straightaway portion of Po'ipu Road at about 12:40 a.m. when the car crossed the center line, went off the road and slammed into the tree.
The driver and her two passengers, a 22-year-old man from Koloa and a 21-year old man from Po'ipu, were taken to the Wilcox hospital in critical condition. Police said that initially the three were to be flown to The Queen's Medical Center on O'ahu, but the trip was delayed after the aircraft was lost off the Big Island yesterday (see Page One story).
Police said no one in the car was wearing a seat belt. Officers said they believed that the car was speeding.
