Texas exploded for four runs in the top of the 11th inning to beat Hawai'i, 13-9, last night to clinch the three-game series.

Huston Street (1-0) pitched four innings of relief, giving up two runs — one earned — to earn the victory for the eighth-ranked Longhorns.

Hawai'i's Clary Carlsen (0-1) deserved a better fate, as the runner representing the go-ahead run reached on a passed ball on a swinging third strike and took second when catcher Creighton Kahoali'i's throw trying to get Seth Johnston racing to first hit him in the back.

Johnston took third on a sacrifice and scored on Nathan Warrick's single to left. After a single by Robby Hudson, Carlsen was lifted for Darrell Fisherbaugh, who served up a three-run home run to left center by Drew Stubbs.

"It's one of those things where you feel good about your effort ... but there comes a point in time when competing and playing hard, staying in games, and battling against a team the quality of Texas takes a back seat to winning because you play the game to win," UH coach Mike Trapasso said.

It was Carlsen's pitching that settled the game, allowing the Rainbows to rally from 8-7 deficit. He was charged with five runs, four earned, in 4 3/8 innings.

Texas regained the lead in the 10th.

Hudson led off with an infield single to short before Stubbs struck out. Dooley Prince then hit a routine fly to left center, where left fielder Jaziel Mendoza and center fielder Josh Green watched the ball fall between them for a double that moved Hudson to third.

Curtis Thigpen was intentionally walked to load the bases, but Taylor Teagarden walked to force in the run that put UT up 9-8. Matt Spencer flied into a double play to left on a diving catch by Mendoza, who threw to third to double off the runner to end the inning.

But UH wasn't through. With two outs in the bottom of the 10th, Andrew Sansaver walked and scored on Matt Inouye's double to right-center to tie the game at 9.

Olsen was charged with seven runs, seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 3 3/8 innings. It was the second consecutive game a UH starter was chased after 3 3/8 innings. Friday's starter, Ricky Bauer, also pitched 3 3/8.

UT starter Sam LeCure allowed five runs — two earned — in four-plus innings.

The Longhorns got an early jump for the second night in a row, scoring three in the first inning. Prince singled to left-center and advanced to third on Thigpen's ground-rule double to left-center. Teagarden followed with a two-run line single to right.

After one out, Teagarden advanced to third when Michael Hollimon grounded out to first and scored on a wild pitch with J. D. Reininger at the plate to make it 3-0 before Reininger grounded out to shortstop to end the inning.

The Rainbows pulled to within one in the bottom on the second. Mendoza walked and took third when Rocky Russo reached on an infield single/throwing error by shortstop Hollimon that allowed Russo to take second. With runners at the corners, Mendoza scored and Russo took third on a passed ball. After Isaac Omura and Guy Kish struck out, Russo scored on Green's single to center to make it 3-2 before Kahoali'i flied out to left.

Texas returned the favor in the third with two more runs. Thigpen led off with a home run to left-center. Teagarden was hit by a pitch and one out later took second on an infield single to shortstop by Hollimon. Reininger followed with a ground single to center to score Teagarden that made it 5-2.

The Longhorns added to their lead with a three-run fourth. The Rainbows scratched for a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to chase LeCure.

The Rainbows scratched for a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the sixth to make it 8-7.

The Rainbows then tied it in the eighth on Nate Thurber's run-scoring double off Texas closer Huston Street.
