Kahuku's Perry, 16 others sign with Warriors

Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawai'i football team has received 17 written commitments today, including a surprising one from Kahuku High standout Jeremy Perry.

Perry, who yesterday verbally committed to the University of Arizona, changed his mind and signed with the Warriors today, the first day NCAA football recruits may sign binding national letters of intent.

During an announcement today at Kahuku's gym, Perry was presented with three letters of intent to sign. They were from Arizona, Oregon State and Hawai'i.

Perry, a 6-foot-3, 290-pound offensive lineman who was The Advertiser's All-State Offensive Player of the Year, discarded the other two and signed with UH.

UH is awaiting one more written commitment, from Fale Laeli of Saint Louis School.

Besides Perry, the Warriors confirmed receiving commitments from 16 others players, including two from the Carolinas.

Brandon Satcher, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound quarterback from North Augusta High in South Carolina, and Andrew Pearman, a Providence Senior High (N.C.) running back, signed today.

Pearman is widely regarded as the jewel of this recruiting class.

Pearman, who can run 40 yards in 4.3 seconds, said he will compete at either slotback or wideout as a freshman, then move to running back for his second year. Three UH running backs will be seniors in the fall.

Last year, Satcher, who was raised in Georgia, moved to North Augusta, which is on the northern side of the South Carolina-Georgia border. As a senior in 2003, he completed 197 of 336 passes for 3,330 yards and 26 touchdowns (all school records). Satcher, who reportedly can run 40 yards in 4.5 seconds, also led the team with 782 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns.

He was named the South Carolina football Player of the Year. He also was selected to the All-State first team for 4-A high schools, South Carolina's highest level. He will be honored this weekend as the Male Athlete of the Year for the Augusta region in South Carolina and Georgia.
