Kalaheo basketball team topples Kahuku in OT

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Kalaheo High School center Sam Wilhoite finally got the scoring help he has been looking for all season last night, and it couldn't have come at a better time as Theo Fujita scored a career-high 26 points to help the Mustangs defeat visiting Kahuku, 74-61, in overtime.

The victory seals the No. 1 seed in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Eastern Division for Kalaheo (9-1) in next week's league playoffs. The Mustangs are ranked No. 4 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of media and coaches; Kahuku (8-2) is No. 7.

The difference between the teams was negligible for the 32 minutes of regulation, but in the overtime period Kalaheo sank 14 of 15 free throws compared to 3 of 8 for the Red Raiders. The Mustangs outscored Kahuku 16-3 in the four overtime minutes.

"Coach (Chico Furtado) mentioned in the locker room that we had been struggling with our free throws," said Fujita, a junior guard. "Tonight we made our free throws, so hopefully we can keep it up."

Kalaheo finished the game 22 of 25 (88 percent) from the line.

Fujita, who made all seven of his free throws, also was deadly from the other line — the 3-point arc. He sank five 3s, including two each in the first and fourth periods. His 3-pointer from the corner with 50 seconds remaining tied the score at 58, where it stood until overtime.

"That's what he's capable of," Furtado said of Fujita. "Not only did he shoot well, but he also didn't make mistakes — he didn't take bad shots and didn't penetrate too deep and turn the ball over. He played an almost flawless game."

Wilhoite led all scorers with 29 points. Waika Carvalho led the Red Raiders with 19 points, Junior Ale added 15 points, and Tevita Finau contributed 13 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, two blocks and a steal.
