THE LEFT LANE
Astronaut alert

Advertiser Staff and News Services

LU
Move over Mars explorers. Ed Lu, Hawai'i's favorite ambassador in space, will give a public talk about "Life on the International Space Station" at 3:30 p.m. today in the University of Hawai'i School of Architecture auditorium.

Lu, who joined the NASA astronaut program in 1994, has flown three space missions and logged more than 196 days in space.

In 2003, as flight engineer, he was the first American to launch and land on a Soyuz spacecraft.

Lu, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Hawai'i Institute for Astronomy from 1992 to 1995 and a former Punahou School wrestling coach, says he always takes something from Hawai'i on his missions, including aloha shirts for fellow astronauts aboard the international space station.

Gov. Linda Lingle will introduce Lu's talk.

For those who can't attend, a Webcast link will be available at www.ifa.hawaii.edu.

Hey, girls: Here's your chance to have fun with minerals, maps, underwater robots and all those things that really get your brains working.

The 10th annual Science Symposium for Girls will give girls in grades 6 through 8 statewide more exposure to careers in math, science and technology.

The symposium begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Hearts Academy.

Navigator Nainoa Thompson of the Polynesian Voyaging Society will be keynote speaker.

Workshops will be conducted by an engineer, veterinarian, dentist, geologist, videographer, geophysicist and oceanographer.

Students pick two of the 20 sessions to attend.

And while the girls are in sessions, their parents can hear child counselor Emma Pavich talk about rearing daughters.

It's free, and besides gaining knowledge, they get T-shirts, too.

To register, phone Remee Bolante, 734-5058 ext. 255.
