Iolani team wins state Science Bowl
A team of students from Iolani School won the Hawai'i Science Bowl and will represent the Islands at the national bowl this spring in Washington, D.C.
Science and math students from 23 high schools competed in the Jan. 25 state bowl at Honolulu Community College. Iolani's team was made up of captain Kelly Nakamura, Carol Pham, Ryan Tsukamoto, Franklin Lau and Jessica Yang. Susan Nishiura is the team's adviser. The school also received $1,000 for its science department for the victory.
Roosevelt High School took second place, and the team won a two-day Neighbor Island trip to study science. The school's science department also received $500.
Four students win awards for essays
Four students received certificates and cash awards for their essays about the dangers of drinking and driving.
The contest, sponsored by the Honolulu Association of Insurance Women, promotes awareness about drunken driving among public high-school students. Thirty students submitted essays.
First place and $75 went to Aaron Arii, a senior at Moanalua High School, for his essay "A Night to Remember." Second place and $65 went to Hannah Cho, a freshman at Moanalua High School. Third place and $50 went to Mitchell Bareng, a junior at Leilehua High School. Fourth place and $25 went to Tasha Welch, a sophomore at Kailua High School.
HMSA announces video contest
Teenagers from public and private middle and high schools are invited to create public service announcements against smoking, alcohol and drug abuse for a video contest sponsored by HMSA.
Students have until April 1 to complete 30-second videos. The winners will be announced May 6. The top videos will be televised.
A workshop on how to produce the videos will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 21 at the state Department of Education's Annex at 475 22nd Ave., Room 120. More information about the contest is available at www.HMSA.com.
Chinese club will award scholarship
The Chinese Catholic Club of Honolulu will award a $1,000 scholarship to a high school senior who graduates this year and plans to attend either the University of Hawai'i-Manoa or Chaminade University in the fall.
The scholarship will be given based on financial need, a high school transcript and letters of recommendation. Applications are available by calling 487-8229 or 382-6848. The deadline is June 1.
Dobelle to be host for 'One on One'
University of Hawai'i President Evan Dobelle will step to the other side of the microphone come May when a series of 13 new shows for the program "One on One" begins airing on Public Television with Dobelle as the interviewer.
The series was begun by former UH Vice President for External Affairs Paul Costello, who left UH in January for a position at Stanford University.
The half-hour show is currently in reruns, airing at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, with replays on Saturdays at 7 p.m.
The first four interviews are with authors James MacGregor Burns and Susan Dunn, actor Alan Arkin and astronaut Ed Lu, who did post-doctoral work at the University's Institute for Astronomy.
UH Vice President for Academic Affairs David McClain is assuming duties as the host for another Costello creation interviews with UH luminaries at 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays on station KKEA-1420 AM.
